Title:
School meal prices – September 2019
Summary of Decision:
To approve the proposed charges for school meals and milk from September 2019.
Proposed Decision:
The proposed price increases are to be implemented from 1st September 2019: - a standard price applies to meals in primary and special schools. The price of a meal in primary and special schools will increase from £2.35 to £2.40. This represents an increase of approximately 2.1%; - secondary school cafeterias provide a range of individually priced items. It is proposed that price increases are applied to items at different rates with the aim of achieving an overall increase in income of 2.5%; - the price of an adult meal will increase from £2.60 to £2.70 (excluding VAT) and from £3.10 to £3.25 (including VAT). The price of an adult Christmas meal will be £3.05 (excluding VAT) and £3.65 (including VAT); and - to maintain the charge for those children of infant age who are not entitled to free milk at £2 per term.
Summary of Reason for Decision:
To ensure that budgeted levels of income are achieved.
Reason for Decision:
The Authority’s Financial Procedure Rules and Financial Instructions impose a duty to review the level of fees and charges on an annual basis. Price increases are applied in multiples of 5p to make income collection administratively easier.
Risks Associated with this Decision:
Potential adverse parental reaction to the price increase resulting in reduced take up of school meals.
Measures to Redress Risk:
Price increases have been kept to what is considered to be a reasonable level. Also, the school meals service works with schools to promote the service and encourage take-up.
